Abstract
The present study aimed to analyze the credit viability of a small informal cattle farmer engaged in beef cattle fattening in the Lurín area, Lima department. The main challenge faced by this type of business is the lack of organized documentation to provide evidence supporting its commercial activity. In this study, the field evaluation methodology used for SME clients in the Peruvian financial system was applied, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. This methodology was used to perform the analysis that allows for the determination of the financial health of the business through the preparation of financial statements, thereby reducing operational risk. It was confirmed that, given the high level of informality among livestock producers and beef traders in Peru, technical knowledge in credit analysis and the experience of the analyst are essential requirements for conducting field evaluations. These elements allow for rapid cross-checking of information to support the viability of a loan request, propose alternatives consistent with the client's situation and business conditions, and support operations with expert judgment. According to the results, the cattle farmer shows an asset backing of 180 head of cattle valued at 403,560 soles, a balance sheet indicating a low level of indebtedness, a net cash flow of 17,066 soles, and a profit of 10,191 soles, which represents a gross margin of 0.12 and a net margin of 0.007. These figures fall below the average, but indicate that the analyzed livestock producer has both the repayment capacity and asset backing necessary to undertake the requested loan for financing a property where a productive unit could be established, with reduced credit risk. Additional qualitative criteria related to business management and the intended use of the investment were also considered in determining the credit viability of the cattle producer.
