Abstract
This study investigates the potential and challenges of urban agriculture in Southern Africa, specifically in the cities of Maputo and Beira in Mozambique, and Cape Town in South Africa. Utilizing a qualitative methodology that includes direct observations, interviews with urban farmers and experts, and an exhaustive analysis of urban agricultural practices and policies, this research aims to extract lessons of potential relevance for the Peruvian context, addressing both current and post-pandemic issues. The findings reveal that urban agriculture in Southern Africa significantly contributes to food security, income generation, and social cohesion, despite facing challenges such as resource scarcity, inadequate infrastructure, and limited government support policies. By examining these lessons from the perspective of cities with similar or more adverse conditions, opportunities are identified to enhance urban sustainability and resilience against future crises, promoting inclusive policies and strengthening community networks for food production. This study underscores the importance of incorporating the perspectives and experiences of Global South countries, which are often not included in comparative analyses within the Peruvian context. The valuable insights obtained here are novel and expected to be relevant for improving the framework of urban agriculture implementation in Peru.
