Abstract
Water is an elementary resource for populations, but the demographic increase leads to greater water consumption in the development of daily activities as well as the development of many productive activities that becomes a right that requires sanitation services as an undeniable element for human dignity and private life of each family. For that reason it is necessary to care for, protect the quality and supply of this vital resource for all living beings. It is for this reason the water footprint should be studied as an indicator of environmental sustainability of water consumption of the population. For the city of Loja as a reference in terms of ecological care in Ecuador, the analysis of this research study will focus on estimating only the environmental sustainability of the direct water footprint that seeks to determine, evaluate, analyse and provide solutions with respect to water resources, in the face of the serious effects of population density, water pollution, global warming and the irregular distribution of water resources. The general research objective was to evaluate the environmental sustainability of the direct water footprint of the city of Loja for the period 2017 - 2019 in order to contribute to the reduction of water use at the level of municipal and citizen strategies, likewise this study is focused on the Direct Water Footprint as one of the sustainability indicators. The parameters were estimated and plotted using environmental software and institutional data provided by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMHI) and the Municipality of Loja; in addition, the Water Footprint Network (WFN) methodology was used to analyse the sustainability of the blue and grey water footprint in water use in the city of Loja, at the sub-basin level for the period 2017- 2019. The sustainability analysis in conjunction with the quantified variables of the Blue and Grey WF of the city, will allow the respective authorities and citizens to make decisions in order to reduce the WF of the city: the positive impacts generated will allow to take a better care and make a correct use of water at the city level and reduce the level of water in a toilet. All these actions will allow a change in the subconscious of the person.
