| dc.description.abstract | The objective of this Professional Proficiency Paper was to describe the design and operation of an accessible domestic vertical hydroponic system for lettuce production (Lactuca sativa). The system was developed in the district of Supe, province of Barranca, department of Lima, using easily accessible materials such as 4-inch PVC pipe, a 20 L plastic bucket, a submersible pump, hydroponic net pots, and a mechanical timer. The methodology included the structural design of the tower, the distribution of 28 plants in four vertical rows, the construction of inclined openings, the installation of the recirculation system, seedling production, transplanting, progressive management of the nutrient solution, phytosanitary control, harvesting, and system cleaning. The main results showed that a total height of 1.96 m allowed productive capacity and ease of handling to be balanced, facilitating transplanting, monitoring, harvesting, and maintenance tasks without the need for support elements. Likewise, adjusting the angle of the net pots and properly selecting the pump reduced nutrient solution losses and improved system operation. Solar radiation management using 50% aluminized shade netting reduced thermal stress and improved crop development conditions. It is concluded that the evaluated vertical hydroponic system represents a viable alternative for domestic lettuce production due to its low electricity consumption, efficient use of space, accessible management, and possibility of construction with locally available materials. | |
