Abstract
The study was conducted at the Small Animal Farm (GAM) of the Small Animal Research and Social Projection Program (PIPSAM) of the Universidad Nacional Agraria de La Molina. The objective was to evaluate the productive and economic efficiency of guinea pigs in the reproductive phase, using three types of feeders: (a) clay pot type, (b) plastic trough type and (c) metal trough type; under two installation systems: ponds and cages. During the five months, 18 male guinea pigs and 90 females (type 1) of the Cieneguilla - UNALM improved variety were worked with, in six different treatments: clay pot in pond (T1), plastic trough in pond (T2), metal trough in pond (T3), clay pot in cage (T4), plastic trough in cage (T5) and metal trough in cage (T6); considering fifteen breeders and three males for each treatment, divided into three repetitions of five mothers and one male each. A balanced diet, forage and water were provided ad libitum. Using a DCA with a factorial arrangement of six treatments and three repetitions in each, where the type of cage and feeder were the factors analyzed, weight gain, food consumption, fertility, litter size, mortality, abortions, shrinkage and costs were evaluated. The treatments, representing the interaction of cages and feeders, showed no significant differences (P>0.05) in any of the variables weight at pairing, weight at weaning, weight gain of breeders, size of litter of live pups, litter size at weaning or in fertility, breeder mortality, pup mortality at birth, pup mortality at weaning and abortions; comparative analysis between feeders showed better results in weight gain and litter size (P<0.05) for the metal trough type feeder. While in the analysis between types of cages, pup mortality at birth and weaning showed differences (P <0.05) with lower values in cage type cages, which resulted in a lower cost and higher economic merit per weaned guinea pig in this type of installation with the use of the metal trough (T6).
