Abstract
This study describes the implementation of a reverse osmosis water treatment system in a plastic manufacturing plant located in Chilca, Lima, with the aim of improving the quality of the water used in both production processes and cooling systems. Initially, the plant faced problems associated with high levels of conductivity and hardness in the supply water, which led to scaling, equipment wear, and increased maintenance costs. To address this situation, the conventional salt-based water softening system was replaced with a reverse osmosis plant, resulting in a significant improvement in the quality of the treated water. In addition, operational procedures and a continuous monitoring program were implemented to control the quality of both the water and industrial effluents, ensuring compliance with current environmental regulations. The results showed a reduction in operational problems related to water quality, an extended service life of cooling equipment, and lower maintenance costs. Furthermore, effluent treatment enabled environmental indicators such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) to remain within the established regulatory limits. Overall, the implementation of this system contributed to a more efficient and sustainable use of water resources, demonstrating that reverse osmosis is an effective alternative for industries facing similar challenges in water management and quality.
