Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of NutrikelpPRO+, a supplement based on Peruvian marine algae, on the intestinal health, immune response, and productivity of laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). One thousand five hundred 60-day-old quails were divided into three treatments, each with six replicates: T1 (control), T2 (NutrikelpPRO+ at 0.1%), and T3 (NutrikelpPRO+ at 0.3%). The results showed that, despite no significant differences in total egg production, the treatments receiving NutrikelpPRO+ experienced several improvements. A greater egg mass and internal quality were observed, including higher albumen height and Haugh units. There was also an improvement in the egg's lipid profile, with a notable increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids like DHA and EPA. At the intestinal level, the 0.3% dose showed better intestinal health, evidenced by longer villi and a better villus-to-crypt ratio, which indicates a greater capacity for nutrient absorption. This translates to improved feed efficiency, as less feed was needed to produce a kilogram of eggs. These positive effects are attributed to the algae's biocompounds, such as fucoidans, laminarans, ulvans, and β-glucans, which enhance intestinal integrity and modulate the immune response. Economically, although the feed cost slightly increased, the greater productive efficiency of the NutrikelpPRO+ group resulted in superior profitability. In conclusion, the use of NutrikelpPRO+ is presented as an innovative and sustainable nutritional strategy for aviculture, promoting intestinal health, strengthening immunity, and improving the productive efficiency of quails.
