Abstract
This professional proficiency report details the implementation of the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) for the artisanal mahi mahi fishery (Coryphaena hippurus) in Peru between 2020 and 2024, with the objective of achieving sustainability certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The author describes her professional experience at WWF Peru, outlining project management processes and strategies aimed at improving resource management, reducing the fishery’s environmental impact on the ecosystem, and strengthening fisheries governance. Among the activities in which the author participated are the establishment of partnerships with exporting companies through the Peru Mahi Alliance, the dissemination of the regulatory framework governing the mahi mahi fishery (Coryphaena hippurus), the design and implementation of a training program for the proper handling and release of marine turtles, and the execution of a pilot electronic monitoring program. Through assessment tools such as the Benchmarking Tool, the report quantitatively analyzes the fishery’s progress against the MSC standard. Finally, it examines the challenges of a process that, after several years of implementation, seeks to consolidate responsible practices to ensure the sustainability of the resource and its fishery, as well as its commercial sustainability
