The bread wheat (Triticum aestivum s sp aestivum) is a basic food for the Peruvian population, however the production is deficient due to several factors including drought and limited agricultural area. Therefore it is necessary to identify bread wheat cultivars with high yield potential and drought tolerant. The research had three objectives: 1) To evaluate the effect of drought on morphological and agronomic traits; 2) To evaluate the effect of drought on physiological and biochemical characteristics and 3) To identify genotypes with tolerance to drought to be used in breeding programs. Independent experiments were established for control (no water restriction during the life cycle) and drought (boot stage) studies using a completely random blocks design with three replications, in La Molina and Junín-Jauja, during two growing seasons. In PHASE 1, eighteen genotypes of wheat were studied and in PHASE 2, six wheat genotypes were selected presenting different degrees of tolerance in the previous phase. It was observed that aerial biomass plant-1 and leaf area were closely related to the yield of droughttolerant wheat genotypes. Root length and root dry weight did not show a significant correlation with the yield of wheat genotypes. On the other hand, the variables number of ears m-2 and the harvest index were good indicators for the selection of wheat genotypes with different degrees of tolerance to drought. The early genotypes in the drought experiment were those with the highest grain weight. The genotypes with greater capacity to accumulate free proline and nitrate reductase were more tolerant to drought conditions. SPAD chlorophyll content and osmotic potential showed no significant relationship with the performance of tolerant genotypes. Considering the previous information, genotypes G11 and G-15 were selected as "drought-tolerant", G-16 as "intermediate tolerant to drought" and G-18 as "susceptible to drought"; based on the evaluation of morphological, agronomic, physiological and biochemical characteristics observed in different localitiesen_US
